Drama 7 - 9

Drama isn’t just for students who wish to be actors!  Many of the skills learned in Drama are valuable in various aspects of life.  For instance, it pays to be well-spoken and confident in a job interview!  The objectives of the drama program are to develop basic skills such as concentration, imagination, emotional expression, self-confidence and the ability to articulate ideas, reflect on one’s own work, and appreciate others’ work and theatre in general.  In order to achieve these goals, the drama classes will complete several units that are based on five disciplines.  Units include some or all of the following: Orientation, Movement (mime and more), Speech, Improvisation/ Acting, Theatre Studies, and Technical TheatreS.G.S. has their own black box theatre, so students get an early introduction to lights and sound.  Having professional equipment to use at all levels of drama greatly enhances the program.  Moreover, we have an entire storage room of costumes and props, which students love to use!

Performing Arts (Drama)

Performing Arts 8 (P.A.8) and Performing Arts 9 (P.A. 9) are classes designed for students who want to explore the discipline of acting, including script work, in depth.  Successful students will be highly motivated, mature, and self-disciplined.  This is the class to take if your dream is to be an actor.  Students are taught how to audition, including writing a theatre resume, and having professional head shots (black and white acting photos) done.  P.A. 8 students produce a straight play, collective, or One-act plays depending on the class members.  P.A. 9 has traditionally produced a full-scale musical complete with choreography and vocal coaching.  All actors in these productions also have technical jobs for the production such as stage management, working on costumes, making or finding props/set, painting set, planning set changes, taking  rehearsal pictures and making displays, in and out-of-school publicity, ticket design and sales, and program design.  In class, and by having after school rehearsals, these students produce quality plays while learning from and having fun with the process.
